What colour should I paint the basement family room?

It's a fairly large space, with grey/blue carpeting and a HUGE natural slate fireplace and wood panelling up to the pony wall. It's very rustic looking (think cottage) but I would appreciate any colour ideas that might make this room brighter and match the rest of our house, which is decorated in 'earth' tones. sage green, pale butter yellow, with a sandy colour running throughout. I'm out of ideas.

I used suede effects "latte" with great success. The texture adds life and interest in large spaces. Very neutral but not dull.
Reply:Pale blue or beige.
Reply:Try gray. Sounds awful, but I have seen some beautiful rooms done in gray. Check out HGTV.com they use gray paint for a lot of their make overs.
