How good of a community is Brentwood ,CA 94513 to live at and raise 3 daughters ages 4-12?

How good are the schools in Brentwood, CA ? Any feedback regarding the pros and cons or even any advice from anyone who lived in Brentwood in the past few years? We are planning to move to Sage Glen Estates this year.

Thank you.

I live about an hour from Brentwood, but don't know enough about it to answer your question well. (I've been there to stop at farmers' stands for fresh produce, but that's about it. Brentwood is known for excellent corn.) I just wanted to clear up one point. There are two different places named Brentwood in California. One is a town on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay area, the other is a district of the city of Los Angeles.

The above answer (that mentions LAUSD -- the Los Angeles Unified School District) refers to the Brentwood in Los Angeles. Your question, with zip code 94513, refers to the Brentwood near San Francisco (and that's the one I live relatively close to).

Brentwood has a lot of new development, and has rapidly changed from a semi-rural town to sprawling suburbia. It has been hard hit by the recent housing bust. The San Francisco Chronicle had a long article about Brentwood this week that you should find interesting:

Be sure to click on the pictures at the top of the web page also. It shows how the population of Brentwood has increased from 8,000 to 48,000 since 1990.

Regarding schools, you can access school ratings by entering your zip code in the following web site. Test scores for Brentwood schools are generally average or a little above average -- not great, not awful, but firmly in the middle.

The high foreclosure rate in Brentwood has led to a decline of revenue for the city, so it's difficult to predict what's in store there for the next few years. Also, California's budget is in crisis this year, and it seems to be perennially poorly managed. Schools may suffer from the budget problems, but that's always a very hot political issue.

I noticed your other question in which you asked whether housing prices will continue to drop. A lot of people would like the answer to that question! I've been wrong about housing values before, and wouldn't even want to make a guess to answer your question. The housing market is pretty sluggish right now, however, throughout the Bay Area.
Reply:Brentwood is a very nice area. It's part of LAUSD, but the local schools have a lot of parent involvement, and have very good API scores. Not much on the downside, except for the LA traffic. Look up the API scores for Revere Jr High, Brentwood Science Magnet, and Palisades High.
