I have a small balcony. I want to plant useful and practical plants that take little maintenance. I've already got sage, chives, shallots and some mint seedlings sprouting. I've got tomato seeds, but I'm worried they might want to climb there's not much room. I'm planning on planting some chillies as well. What plants would be quite low maintenance but used alot in cooking? I'm after stuff I can use alot but still enjoy nurturing.
Thanks !
How can I plant a herb and veggie garden in a small apartment?
Mint (I love mint in a glass of cool water), rosemary, lemongrass, patio tomatoes, chives (the blossoms look great in a salad), arugula, borage (more edible flowers- tastes like cucumber) chamomile (these flowers are edible too and you dry the leaves for tea) lemon verbena (again edible flowers) and the leaves are good in cool water and tea, so lemony. Violas are great in a salad as are nasturtiums, panseys and violets...
Reply:i don't know how it is called in english but aside from pots (clay or plastic made), there is also a plastic one available that is in rectangular form. but since your living in an apartment, i would suggest to get the plastic ones as it won't give much weight (on the balcony). tomatoes can be planted on pots too (it won't climb as there is no much space). (any plants would tend to grow higher if the base/container is big and in depth. try to buy different seeds for salad vegetables eg: lettuce, spinach, basil, etc. now mixed these seeds and spread it on your pot. see to it that sun can reach to it esp early in the morning %26amp; water it everyday. within 3weeks or so, you can make a veg salad from that. you can grow some peppers too or any leafy veg. all of these doesn't need much attention but you just have to be careful not to let the soil get dry.
