What part in native American beliefs do a turtle shell and sage brush have.?

My step brother is of the Caddo tribe, and gave me this some time ago. Not wanting to seem ignorant of his beliefs i was too imbarrassed to ask him.

What part in native American beliefs do a turtle shell and sage brush have.?
Don't feel ignorant, don't be embarrased, go ahead and ask him. I, myself, am Muskogee so I can't help you on the significance of the sage and turtle shell to the Caddo people. I have a feeling that he wants to share his culture with you, by giving you these things, but doesn't want to seem pushy about it. If you are curious, which you seem to be, I'm pretty sure that he will gladly tell you what you want to know and then some.
Reply:I think the shell is for putting the sage in to burn it and keep evil spirits out, but I'm not sure. I saw something very similar on television.
Reply:Ask him. Just tell him you want to know what it's for and how to do it properly.

If the shell is like a dish, it may be for purification/prayer stuff. I know others sometimes use sage and an abalone shell...
